Job Summary Join the Louros Lab at UT Southwestern Medical Center. Our lab is an affiliate of the O'Donnell Brain Institute, at the Center for Alzheimer's and Neurodegenerative Diseases.

We are a newly established lab hiring a full-time experienced Research Associate that will be involved in cutting-edge projects focused on gaining mechanistic insight into protein aggregation/amyloid formation, as well as the role of interactions between amyloids and other proteins or biomolecules as modifiers of amyloid assembly in disease-associated and functional amyloids. This role is central in the daily research performed in the lab, aimed at addressing major neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's with the ultimate goal of developing a novel class of therapeutics. To accomplish this, our lab projects integrate techniques ranging from molecular, synthetic and structural biology (with emphasis on cryoEM), to biophysical/computational characterization and biological engineering of macromolecules. The interdisciplinary nature of the lab will be an ideal environment for candidates interested in expanding their skillset. Joining our lab, you will become part of an expert community dedicated to battling neurodegenerative disorders and other major amyloid diseases (such as type II diabetes).

Preferred Skills
  • Highly proficient in molecular biology techniques, including molecular cloning * Proficient in biophysical techniques
  • Ideally, a candidate able to commit for at least 2 years in the lab * Excellent communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills and record keeping, general high attention to detail
  • Positive attitude, team player
  • Lab managerial experience
  • Experience working with projects related to protein folding/aggregation/stability, amyloid formation or neurodegeneration
  • Proficient in structure determination methods, particularly cryoEM * Knowledge working with or synthesizing peptides
  • Experience with mammalian cell/tissue culture, handling patient tissue handling/extractions and flow cytometry is a plus
Experience and Education
  • Masters degree with major coursework in field of assignment and three (3) years of laboratory experience including at least two years at level of Research Assistant II or equivalent.
  • Bachelor\'s degree with major coursework in field of assignment and four (4) years of laboratory experience including two years at level of Research Assistant II or equivalent.
Lab Duties
  • Lab organisation; determines work assignments of other members, provide expertise, training, and consultation to medical students, graduate students, residents, and other laboratory personnel of lower grade with respect to techniques, procedures, and equipment utilized in research or experiments
  • Equipment Management: Oversee and maintain state-of-the-art equipment at the Louros lab. Ensure proper calibration, troubleshoot issues, and coordinate with other lab members for equipment upgrades or repairs.
  • Compiles and analyzes results of research assignments and submits to principal investigator.
  • Performs or supervises design, development, or adaptation of equipment or apparatus used in research experiments to obtain desired results.
  • Assists principal investigator and other professional personnel in preparation of reports and papers for publication, usually exercising responsibility for writing of segment or phase of report or paper.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Duties
  • Recommends and/or initiates new or modified procedures and techniques based upon latest developments in assigned field or analysis of research data.
  • Performs computer programming for accumulation and analysis of research data.
  • Designs, constructs, repairs, or modifies electronic and/or mechanical equipment or apparatus used in experiments and research projects. Instructs medical students, graduate students, residents, or other laboratory personnel of lower grade with respect to techniques, procedures, and equipment utilized in research or experiments.
  • Assists principal investigator and other professional personnel in writing of reports and papers for publication.
  • May provide working supervision to employees of lower grade engaged in performance of variety of difficult and complex laboratory work tasks.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
