JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Department

The Department of Communication Sciences and Oral Health is housed within the College of Health Sciences and offers several degrees in the areas of communication sciences and dental hygiene. Communication sciences degrees include a B.S. in Communication Sciences, an online master's degree in Education of the Deaf, and a master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology with both residential and distance learning venues. We also offer post-baccalaureate certificates in Bilingual Speech-Language Pathology, Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Teaching STEM in Deaf Education, and Multicultural and Diversity Studies. In addition, we provide an emphasis area for the PhD in Health Studies and the PhD in Special Education. There are 26 full-time tenured, tenure-track, and clinical faculty members in the department who work together to support the missions of the programs, department, and university. Our Deaf Education faculty members are engaged in a variety of research and teaching efforts and provide instruction and supervision to students statewide and nationally.

The Position

The Assistant/Associate Professor will be expected to: 1) teach on-campus undergraduate and online graduate courses in topics not limited to language, literacy, assessment, differentiated instruction, and field-base instruction of students who are deaf/hard of hearing; 2) provide service to the department, college, and university; 3) actively pursue research and publication opportunities related to deaf education. Candidates must also be willing to serve and collaborate with schools and communities within the Dallas-Ft. Worth Metroplex.

This is a full-time, tenure/tenure track appointment. Start date for the position is August 2024. Priority will be given to those applicants actively pursuing scholarly research with an interest in disseminating the work through presentations and publications that contribute to the field of deaf education.

Qualified candidates must 1) have an earned doctorate in deaf education or related field, (2) have at least five years of classroom or itinerant teaching experience with culturally and linguistically diverse children who are deaf/HH, (3) demonstrate proficiency of American Sign Language (native users of ASL strongly encouraged to apply), (4) demonstrate evidence of a comprehensive philosophy for educating students who are deaf/hard of hearing, (5) demonstrate a promising program of research activities in deaf education-related areas, and (6) demonstrate effectiveness in undergraduate, graduate, or professional teacher training.
