Job Description

The Department of Radiology, at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (Dallas, Texas), is seeking a full-time imaging scientist with expertise in ultrasound instrumentation to expand new and ongoing technical and ultrasound contrast media development, translational research, and clinical trials. The ideal candidate is curious, collaborative, and passionate about solving real-world problems, and has a strong theoretical background in ultrasound, especially in its use in medical applications. The position will focus on simulation, validation and experimentation of different ultrasound modes and methodologies in both basic research and clinical settings.

This faculty position will be within the Research section within the Department of Radiology and will maintain close interactions with the physicians in the CACTUS lab (Collaborative for Advanced Clinical Techniques in Ultrasound), and scientists in the TRUST lab (Translational Research in Ultrasound Theranostics). The Department of Radiology within the UT Southwestern University Hospital and Clinics, has access to the latest clinical instrumentation, and maintains technical development research relationships with several industry partners, with three clinically-equivalent on-site research ultrasound systems with advanced imaging tools and access to raw ultrasound data. TRUST lab operates several basic science laboratories including a small animal imaging lab, with both clinically-equivalent ultrasound imaging devices as well as a Verasonics programmable ultrasound research system. Facilities are available for phantom development, micro- and nano-particle formulation, characterization and testing, and cell culture and imaging.

This faculty position will be in the Department of Radiology with an opportunity for a joint appointment within the Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME), with access to resources in the new BME facility on the UT Southwestern Medical Center campus (a joint venture with UT Dallas). This faculty member will report directly to the Vice-Chair of Research and is expected to work collaboratively with ultrasound-focused physicians and scientists in the Department. This faculty member is expected to seek extramural funding for independent research as well as participate in collaborative projects and grant applications. The faculty member is also expected to participate in ultrasound education programs.

The applicant is expected to have a PhD (or equivalent) in physics, medical physics, or engineering (biomedical, electrical or mechanical) and documented ultrasound experience. Involvement in acoustics, data acquisition and signal processing is required, including troubleshooting clinical and research ultrasound equipment and approaches to materials characterization. The applicant is expected to have experience in pulse design and sequencing, beam forming, output power analysis, and spectral data quantitation. Expertise in programming and interesting in artificial intelligence applications in ultrasound image analysis is favored.

Candidates applying at the Assistant Professor level should have a minimum of two years of post-doctoral training. Exceptional candidates can apply at the Associate Professor level. Candidates at the Associate Professor level are expected to have a strong publication record and peer reviewed funding in the areas described above.
